Is 508 a good MCAT score? Is 508 a bad MCAT score?

Is 508 a good MCAT score? Is 508 a bad MCAT score? The answer depends on several factors such as your current GPA, what type of medical school you want to get into (MD vs DO vs Canadian), and most importantly, your individual section scores.

A 508 is a good MCAT score if you scored a high, even distribution for each individual score. For example, a 127 (C/P), 127 (CARS), 127 (B/B), 127 (P/S) (508) is excellent. It shows medical schools that you passed every section of the exam. I do not recommend retaking the MCAT if you scored this kind of 508. Such a 508 can virtually get you into any medical school in US or Canada. Medical schools strongly consider 127 (a 10 on the old MCAT) to be the passing score for each section. This is especially the case for Canadian medical schools when they look at the MCAT CARS section heavily.

If your 508 is a uneven or lopsided, the factors mentioned above (GPA, type of school, and section scores) will become critical factors to determining whether or not your 508 is a good MCAT score.

If you got any one point deviation above and below 127 for two sections, you should be fine. For example, 128, 126, 127, 127 (508). You do not need to retake unless you want to go to a top 5 medical school. If your GPA is above 3.5 you can get into a majority of schools and your MCAT will not prevent you from an acceptance.

But if this happens for more than one section, for example, 127, 126, 129, 126 (508) you will most likely need to retake the exam. You never want to score below a 127 for more than one section.

A 128, 125, 128, 127 (508) is the sort of 508 a majority of students get. The CARS section ends up being their lowest score. Most medical schools understand the difficulty of the MCAT CARS section. If your GPA is very high, this 508 will be good enough to get you into most MD schools, all DO schools, but not into a Canadian school since Canadian medical schools value the CARS section the most.

A 129, 125, 126, 128 (508) should be retaken. Anytime there is a 2 point deficit from 127 and a one point deficit from 127, medical schools will most likely view this as a mediocre score that can be improved upon.

If you happened to get a 508 and scored 124 or lower on any single section, medical schools will most likely not believe that 508 is a good MCAT score.
